I wanted stereo sound from my Apple IIgs, so I looked at my options - 1) I could buy one from the U.S. and pay a hefty premium for the card and shipping, or 2) I could build my own using the A2 FAQ and the schematic listed therein. Well, you already know the outcome of the decision as this page isn't entitled "My Kewl eBay Purchase" or similar.

I made a slight improvement to the design by using a single quad jfet op amp in place of the 2 dual bifet op amps listed in the original circuit diagram. I guess these things probably weren't around in 1992 when the original design was done.

This was my very first electronics project, and I'm pleased to say that it works really well (after finally finding a bad solder joint that made the left channel a quiet hum....but that's another story). And yes, I must be a software engineer, as I placed all of the components on the wrong side.....doh! But, if it aint broke, don't fix it...     ;-)

Here is the original circuit diagram as done by "Jeff Hurlburt".

Here is my implementation using a TL084 quad jfet op amp in place of two TL082 dual bifet op amps.

I screwed the prototyping board to the bottom of an old ISA card which required 5 pins to be removed.

A closer look...

And the flip side...

Note that I placed the stereo jack on the back of the card so that components weren't bumped when inserting the speaker plug.

The board installed and ready for some tunes!
